영화 제작진은 <손님>의 제목이 토속 민간신앙에서 시작해 익숙한 단어를 뒤집어보는 것에서 출발했다면 주제와 소재는 독일의 민간 전설인 ‘하멜른의 피리 부는 사나이’에서 따 왔다고 밝혔다. 중세 시대, 음식물을 축내고 사람들을 공격하는 쥐떼로 골치를 썩던 하멜른의 시장에게, 낯선 남자가 나타나 쥐를 없애 줄테니 금화 천 냥을 달라고 제안한다. 거래는 성립되고 남자는 피리를 불어 쥐떼를 몰아내지만 시장이 약속한 돈을 다 주지 않자 남자가 다시 피리를 불어 아이들을 데리고 사라지는 내용의 ‘피리 부는 사나이’는 그림동화와 브라우닝의 시를 통해 널리 알려졌다.
